Spotlight Theatre Academy
Acting for Stage & Camera I
Schedule TBD
“Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.”
(Sanford Meisner)
Of course, becoming more skilled as an actor results in more opportunities to perform.
What's not so obvious is the benefits in other areas of the student’s life. It's a study that improves critical thinking, critical listening, and close reading as the student learns to develop and truthfully portray a character.
Self-discipline, professionalism, learning to collaborate and network are also developed for those considering entertainment arts as a career choice
“Spotlight’s acting programs stand apart from other programs because of our integrated approach to technique. Our students are ready to work no matter what post-secondary career or educational path they choose.”
(Tim Barden)
Performers in the 21st century must be familiar with the approaches needed for conventional live theater, on-camera and hybrid genres (like at Spotlight’s Black Box). Because of this, our programs teach on-stage and on-camera acting together to create a solid foundation from which to work.
Topics include:
What is good acting? (Hint, it’s hard to define, but most people know it when they see it).
Acting and fear of failure. How to get beyond stage fright (Hint, it’s a skill you can use the rest of your life no matter what you do.)
Demystifying why there are so many acting techniques? Method, Stanislavski, Viewpoints, Meisner, Viola Spolin, Practical Aesthetics, etc.
The moment-to-moment act of discovering your character
Vocal articulation, characterisations, accents
Why Improvisation makes most actors nervous at first, and what to do about it.
Why acting for the camera differs from acting for an audience, how to be successful at both, and how to use skills in one to improve your work in the other.
Monologue prep
Auditioning without fear
What an actor’s most powerful tool is and how to use it.
Taught by industry professionals, STA provides students with the tools, insight, and performance opportunity to grow as authentic, engaging artists.
Session I
Spotlight alumni Ellie Valastro (currently in the Broadway Tour of CATS) and Kerstin Anderson (Maria in the Broadway tour of Sound of Music and Laura Benanti’s alternate in Broadway’s My Fair Lady).
Please see our Studio Calendar for weeks/days that we are closed.
